Job Summary:

The successful Justice Coordinator promotes social justice and maximizing human potential while advocating for the rights of individuals. Working as a member of the community, you will be a key member of the interagency team working alongside many other professionals.

Under the supervision of the Councilor i/c, the successful applicant’s responsibilities will be to establish and support initiatives focused on the criminal justice system, and must be able to provide support services to clients involved in the justice system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties ARE NOT meant to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by the employee in this classification, but only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. In accordance with standards of BOCN and reporting to the committee/board, CEO and/or the Chief & Council, the employee will:

  • Address the mandate, goals, objectives of the community justice program,
  • Coordinate adult and youth alternative measures in cooperation with appropriate personnel,
  • Work with clients of all age groups including children, youth, adults and elders,
  • Attend and chair BOCN justice committee/board meetings, and report on community justice activity,
  • Work closely with the local RCMP detachment on community-drive initiatives,
  • Attend court when required for clients on caseload, with proper Crown Summary reports made available to the court,
  •  Work with Chief & Council (primarily Councillor in Charge), Committee/Board and CEO/CFO to create a yearly work plan and budget based on funding and the priorities of the community,
  • Coordinate and/or deliver justice awareness, education and prevention strategies to the community through workshops, training sessions, orientations, etc.,
  • Submit statistical and monthly activity reporting as required by funding agencies, and Chief & Council,
  • Attend meetings with fellow Justice workers and/or Coordinators and BOCN interagency meetings,
  • Enhance Elder involvement in programming and initiatives,
  • Advocate for BOCN youth members as required (primarily on-reserve),
  • Mediate for BOCN youth members as required (primarily on-reserve),
  • Provide client services in court ordered programming,
  • Facilitate a fine option program for the community and its residents,
  • Work with the Nation to find additional funds and resources to create, enhance and support community led justice programs,
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Nation within the scope of this position.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Certificate, Diploma or University Degree in Human Services,
  • The successful applicant must have completed some relevant Post Secondary Education involving community justice, or equivalent combination of education and experience,
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, as reporting is a major part of this role,
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office,
  • Class 5 Driver’s License with a reliable vehicle,
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check,
  • Mediation training is a definite asset,
  • Knowledge of case management, crisis intervention procedures, child protection, child-in-care services and protocols would be an asset,
  • Ability to speak/understand Cree, would be an asset, and
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards Aboriginal cultures and traditions is an asset for this position.
