STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL: SIGNIFICANT INCIDENT AT THE BOCN

Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – The following statement was released by the Council of the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation today:

“Members of Council were informed of a significant incident that occurred at the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation this morning at approximately 10am. We are working with and have been in constant contact with the RCMP and appropriate authorities.

We are not in a position to release specific details regarding the incident nor will further information be released from Council.

Due to the nature of the incident, we would like to remind community members to refrain from speculation as the situation is still unfolding. The RCMP have indicated that the situation poses no risk to community members.

Due to the heavy police presence, we are strongly recommending community members who do not live in the immediate vicinity of the new village to avoid the area for the time being.

The Constable Robin Cameron Education Complex and the Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School – as a precautionary measure and due to the schools’ proximity to the incident – were placed under lock-down. We want to emphasize that at no point were students, or staff in any danger whatsoever. This was simply done as a precautionary measure. Regular operations at the school have resumed.
