STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF: CO-MANAGEMENT/INTERVENTION STATUS REMOVED
Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – The following statement was release by Chief Petit today on the receipt of a letter from Indigenous Services Canada confirming that the Co-Management/Intervention regime imposed by ISC has been removed:
“In a letter dated December 4, 2019, Indigenous Services Canada stated ‘Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Band has effectively met the requirements of the current Management Action Plan‘ and ‘we are pleased to advised that effective immediately, Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Band has successfully been removed from any requirements associated with the Default Prevention and Management Policy‘.
‘We commend the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Band on the progress you have made while under intervention/default management and wish you First Nation continued success.‘
The Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation is now – after 20 years – out of Co-Management!
I wish to acknowledge and thank all our Directors and staff for their hard work in implementing Council’s vision. Their dedication, and the collective effort of our community as a whole has made this a reality for us all. Change has undoubtedly been difficult at times, but through our efforts, our nation is now in the best, most financially stable position it has ever been.
This is a milestone we can all be proud of!”
