STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL: 2019 FEDERAL ELECTION

Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – The following statement was released by the Council of the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation regarding the upcoming federal election on Monday, October 21, 2019:

“Our Council has watched with great interest the current political climate as it relates to the federal election. Elections are important – they are an opportunity for you to ensure your voice is heard and an opportunity for you to express your satisfaction, or displeasure with the government of the day.

First Nations people were given the right to vote in 1960, and since then, each and every election participation has grown more and more as we realize our voice matters and can shape the political landscape on our shared lands. In the last federal election (2015), 61.5% of on-reserve eligible First Nation voters cast a ballot, and our collective effort resulted in an historic 9 Indigenous Members of Parliament elected to the House of Commons – the most ever!

On October 21st, we’re encouraging you to do the same.

We live in the federal constituency of Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek. The candidates seeking election are:

  1. BLOCK, Kelly – Conservative Party of Canada
  2. CALIX, Jasmine – New Democratic Party of Canada
  3. GIBSON,Dean – Green Party of Canada
  4. MALO, Rebecca – Liberal Party of Canada
  5. PAYANT, Cody – Peoples’ Party of Canada

You can register to vote by clicking here.

A Community Resource Officer has been assigned to the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation. Clayton Sutherland will be going door-to-door working for Elections Canada and will be able to assist you with your voter needs. If you require his assistance, you may contact him at 639-212-7244. A polling station will be located at the Justice Building the day of the election.

On Monday, October 21st, go vote!”
