STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL
Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – The following statement was released today regarding a fatality in our community:
“Council members and staff were first advised of an incident early this afternoon involving members of our community and the possibility of a fatality.
The RCMP were immediately contacted and members of Council – along with appropriate staff – prepared the necessary resources in our community including Mental Health supports, and Child and Family Services. The Fire Crew was also contacted to assist with directing traffic away from the scene.
It is important to note that in the initial stages of a situation like this, we are extremely limited on what information can be shared. After further communication with RCMP we were able to confirm that they had deployed the Major Crimes Unit, the Traffic Reconstruction Unit, and the Identification Unit, and that one individual was in custody.
At this time, with permission from the family, we are able to confirm the passing of Jessica Cameron. All members of Council join in expressing our sincere condolences to Patsy, Martin, and Jessica’s little ones, and to the countless friends and family who held her close to their heart.
It is a devastating day for our community – we will come together as a community to support our grieving relatives. Again, we extend our sincere condolences to all who loved and cherished Jessica.”
