COUNCILLOR STATEMENT: “Simâkanisihkâniwikamik” – Veterans Memorial Hall
Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – The following statement was released by the Councillor in charge of Veterans Affairs, Kevin Seesequasis, on the renaming of the Recreation Centre:
“As we observe Remembrance Day today with our honoured Veterans, their families, and our fellow community members, it is important to remember that we must do this – always. We must always remember the service of our honoured Simâkanisihkânak of the past, and the strong Simâkanisihkânak of today; we must always remember that some have given their lives for our way of life; we must always remember that families sacrificed so that we may enjoy the freedoms of today.
Today, on this sacred day, I am truly honoured and proud to join Chief Petit and my colleagues on Council to announce that the Rec Centre of the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation is officially renamed “Simâkanisihkâniwikamik” – Veterans Memorial Hall.
In time, and in partnership and consultation with our Veterans and dedicated partners, we will see a permanent memorial established here at our new Veterans Memorial Hall – so that every time we enter, we can be reminded of the sacred oath we must all work to uphold: we will never forget.”
