COUNCILLOR STATEMENT: SECOND ANNUAL TWO-SPIRIT PRIDE FESTIVAL

Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – The following statement was released by the Councillor in charge of Community Development, Kevin Seesequasis, today on the signing of the proclamation declaring June 15th as the Two-Spirit Pride Festival for the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation:

“It is with immense pride that I join my colleagues on Council in announcing that for the second year in a row, the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation will host a Two-Spirit Pride Festival!

On May 31st, we signed Band Council Resolution 2017-2018-013 and proclaimed June 15th as our second annual Two-Spirit Pride Festival.

Pride is a global movement that stands for equality and the celebration of diversity. It’s a way to honour and respect all people regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation; it is a way to acknowledge the adversity and struggle that members of the Two-Spirit/LGBTQ community face every day; and it is a way to re-enforce the message that bullying in all forms is unacceptable.

But more than all that, Pride is simply about demonstrating to Two-Spirited individuals our acceptance and love.

This year, we’ve added a film screening and a talking circle to our festival so there are more opportunities to learn and share. I hope you’ll join us on June 15th to celebrate diversity and acceptance at the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation Two-Spirit Pride Festival!”

All interested individuals and groups are encouraged to participate. You can view the draft itinerary, the proclamation, and register you and/or your group for the parade here.
