Re: Smoking in Public Buildings

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Band Members,

We value the health of our members and seek to foster mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being in our community.

In 2007, the leadership of the day passed a bylaw prohibiting smoking in public buildings with the key exception for cultural and ceremonial practices and/or events.

To this end, our Council is again reaffirming our commitment to healthy work, living, and public spaces by prohibiting smoking in the following public facilities:

  • Beardy’s Band Office
  • Beardy’s Rec Centre
  • Beardy’s Seniors Hall
  • Beardy’s Justice Building
  • Beardy’s Arena
  • Beardy’s Daycare
  • Constable Robin Cameron Education Complex
  • Chief Beardy’s memorial Elementary School
  • Willow Cree Health
  • Willow Cree Education & Training Centre
  • Blackhawk’s Gas
  • Blackhawk’s Grill

Further, we request that you smoke a minimum of 10 feet away from the front entrances of these facilities.

Finally, all ceremonial and cultural practices/events are exempt from this policy. In the case of funerals, we will leave it to the respective families and their wishes but request that Band members honour their request.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact any member of council at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Chief & Council
Beardy’s & Okemasis First Nation
